David Hunter fires his pistol.
He doesn’t look at his target, instead opting to turn around and begin a trek away from them.
He puts his pistol back in his pocket as he meets up with Jack, who puts his own pistol.
“Okay, so that was these schmucks handled. Mine telling me what the plan is?” he asks.
“Walk in. Kick ass. Make some fuckers bleed. Leave. Celebrate a successful night with Holden,” David answers.
Jack shakes his head, fixing his Hawaiian shirt a bit.
“I meant with these fuckers…” he mutters.
“Oh. Well, I’d imagine that Paradox is going to send a bunch of assholes to deal with these guys. Not unless my group somehow got involved in some shit while I was away,” David answers.
“They did,” Mercury pipes up from behind them.
David and Jack stop and look back at him. He’s scowling, but otherwise looks fairly nonchalant with his crossed arms.
“They did…?” David asks.
“They did. Lapis left, but Ace has been doing a good job of keeping up with things, including your alliances with the Forbiddens,” Mercury says.
He hands over a cellphone. David takes a look and spots a blue skinned figure flying up in the air above Baltimore near a tall building. Her wings of water show up well against the otherwise rainy environment.
David hands the cellphone back.
“That is the new home of Daemon. Now, I don’t know for sure why he’s now in Baltimore, but rumor has it that’s the one about two hours from Delmarva,” Mercury adds in.
David nods, returning on his walk with Jack as he ponders with this all means.
They reach Jack’s Civic, but before they get in, David begins to speak.
“Any chance you know what’s going on?” he asks.
“You know Max more than I do,” Jack says.
David sighs, pounding the top of the car a few moments.
“First he blindsides me on Clash. Then he falls off the wagon hard. Then he moves halfway across the country and to a different dimension. There’s something in Delmarva…” he ponders.
“Or someone,” Jack adds.
David nods a few times before leaning back against the car.
“What’s on your mind?” Jack asks.
“What we’re doing. Serving Paradox like we are, like it’s some kind of punishment. All while getting back into the wrestling game. It feels weird. And now that Holden and I have brought Pandæmonium back, I’m worried that my wresting friends might get involved with everyone else.”
David looks behind him at Jack to get his reaction.
He scowls when Jack just shrugs.
He scoffs, rolling his eyes and going to open the car door.
“Yeah, I wouldn’t expect you to understand,” he says.
Before he can open the door, Jack locks the car once more.
“The fuck does that mean?” Jack asks.
“It’s been a while since you’ve had friends.”
Jack puts his keys back into his own jeans pocket. He then crosses his arms and stares at his son, giving him a silent look to explain.
“For the love of the unknown…” David mutters. “You never really had allies in wrestling. The only friends you’ve had were Uncle Chuck and Uncle Frank, and when was the last time you spoke to the former?”
Jack doesn’t answer the question. Instead he offers a counterpoint.
“What about Jack?” he asks.
“Spicer? Really? Trust me, he’d consider you nothing more than a coworker, if even that,” David retorts. “I’ve got brothers and friends all over. When we’re not working or I’m not wrestling, I do what I can to see them.”
David shrugs.
“Hell, I’ve got friends in wrestling, something you really can’t say you have or have ever had. Holden and Gerry are my boys. There isn’t much I wouldn’t do for them.”
“Can’t say the same about me?” Jack asks.
David raises his eyebrow, which earns a pained scoff from the elder Hunter.
“I’m sorry, have they ever tried to ruin my life, my career, and my livelihood?” David asks rhetorically.
Jack shakes his head, unlocking the car.
“Unbelievable…”
Before Jack can open his car door, David opens his, clicking the lock button inside of it.
“No, it’s fucking not. I know it’s hard for you to grasp this, Jack, but it’s kind of hard to forget what you’ve done to me. You’ve made my life hell because I wouldn’t do what you told me, despite me having long since lived my own life independent of your own bullshit.”
“Oh, you had your own bullshit, is that right?” Jack asks.
“Yeah! When you’re molested by a witch for three years starting at 15 and then find yourself somebody you can trust to help you and respect you and protect you not long after you’re free from that, you’ve usually gone through some bullshit! In the Game, I was lost until Ace helped me, until Argit helped me, until Merc helped me. Where the fuck were you? Shit, you were barely home for me to ask.”
The two of them wait a few moments, letting David’s words sink in.
“You always believed that you were better than you were. Even when you won State Penn, you were told, plainly and bluntly, you weren’t ready. And you weren’t. And you never were. Me? I wasn’t ready…not until Holden and I formed Pandæmonium and brought Gerry in. I finally found some allies in that world that I could trust. And now, here in CU:LT? I’m teaming with my brother…and I’m fucking happy about it.
We dominated Pure Class as its only Tag Team. We dismantled the very fabric of the company to the point where, when it ended up missing a piece of it—me—it ended up closing shop.
Cassanova put the two of us back together not only because he’s desperate for tag teams, nah…because he knows Holden and I can trust each other, and he can trust in the two of us to give him the blood-soaked violence he so desperately craves.
We were Underground Kings. I’ve stuck with the name, but Holden isn’t one to forget the taste.
So yeah…I got friends. I got brothers.
But this isn’t David Hunter proving to his last generation that he has those when Jack Hunter doesn’t.
It’s David Hunter and Holden Ross causing Pandæmonium for CU:LT.
And when there’s nothing but bodies left in that ring, bleeding out with me and Holden standing above them?
Quite frankly, at that moment, I couldn’t give a fuck about Jack Hunter.”
David shakes his head, beginning the walk back to Mercury.
“Where are you going?” Jack asks.
“Getting a ride with Merc!” David calls out.
Jack waits a few moments before responding again.
“See you in Guyana?”
David raises his right hand, giving Jack the middle finger while continuing to walk.
Jack unlocks his car, continuing to stare at his retreating son.
“Yeah…it’ll be fine…”
He doesn’t look at his target, instead opting to turn around and begin a trek away from them.
