Team name: V.L.I.
Team Alignment: Face (Hilariously, they work more as a tweener team – their tactics and actions are cold, calculating, and pragmatic, occasionally skirting the line on heel without fully crossing over into cheating. In this instance, they’re faces because, y’know, Casanova English.)
Team members: Johnny Bacchus and Grace Leary
Team entrance theme: “The Death of Peace of Mind” by Bad Omens
Team entrance details:
The lights in the arena cut out as the opening notes of “The Death of Peace of Mind” begin to play over the P.A. On the Tron, a series of images and letters flash:
the letter V, a set of onyx rosary beads,
the letter L, a sigil drawn on a concrete floor,
the letter I, two silhouetted figures
As Noah Sebastian’s vocals begin, two spotlights hit opposite ends of the stage. Beneath one walks Grace Leary, dressed in an all-black suit and turtleneck, the hood of her jacket pulled up over her head and a black scarf wrapped around her lower face. From the other side of the stage and under the second spotlight walks Jonathan Bacchus, dressed in matching attire with a balaclava over his head and a black baseball bat draped over his shoulder. The lights go black once more, and with each hit of the echoing 808, the spotlights flash to reveal the pair approaching one another. Joined together under an icy blue spotlight, the pair look down the ramp towards the ring. Johnny reaches up to pull the balaclava off his head, revealing his eyes smeared with black shadow that can only be described as warpaint, and the two make eye contact before looking back.
The lights explode in a strobe burst before coming fully on as the song kicks into its groove. The two stalk down the ramp, both faces masks of quiet intensity and determination.
Anderson Shepley: And making their way to the ring, weighing in at a combined 350 lbs…. the team of Jonathan Bacchus and Grace Leary. They are V.L.I!
At the base of the ramp, they split off and circle the ring in opposite directions as the chorus of their theme explodes over the speakers. Once meeting at the opposite corner, they remove their coats and Jonathan rests his bat against the ring steps. They ascend the stairs and Jonathan steps up onto the middle rope to hold it down so Grace can slink through, and he vaults himself over the top to join her. They stalk the ring, eyeing their adversaries with quiet intensity before they take to the corner.
At the corner, Jonathan pulls himself up to stand on the middle rope as Grace removes the turtleneck to reveal her ring attire beneath. Looking out over the crowd, Bacchus takes in the reaction. He pulls off his own turtleneck and discards it to the outside, turning to sit on the top turnbuckle as he glowers at their adversaries. A quiet, confident smile parses both their lips as the lights slowly come on.
Team Tactics:
V.L.I. work as a strategic, well-oiled machine. They strike fast, hard, and intelligently – they make industrious use of tags to keep one another fresh while attempting to isolate and wear down one member of the opposing team. They revel in utilizing tactics and mind games, psyching opponents out or exploiting flaws in their teamwork. They are more than happy to take full advantage of the environment, so long as it doesn’t cross the lines into outright cheating. They’re pragmatic, calculating, and willing to take a bullet for one another to ensure the success of the team.
Team moves:
-Camel Clutch -> Running shin kick, dropkick, or knee to the head (executed by either)
-Shotgun Dropkick (Leary) -> German Suplex (Bacchus)
-Combination Leg Sweep and European Uppercut (The Ascension’s “Fall of Man”)
-Double team Wing Snapper
Team Signatures:
-Paradise Lost – Meet Defeat (Leary) + Second rope Curb Stomp (Bacchus)
-“The Yeet” – One member of the team will literally just huck a (usually non-legal) member of the other team into the crowd to isolate them. Especially to prevent a tag, or in the case of non-title matches or title defenses win by count-out.
Team finisher:
-Assisted Singles Finishers – Johnny will lift Grace and help her rotate for O Daughter of Babylon rather than her requiring to leap from the top rope, and Grace will help spike an opponent as Johnny executes the Tragedy at Buffalo.
-The Terror – Shatter Machine (Jonathan lifts, Grace delivers the Codebreaker)
